The drums of war are beating. The President of the United States has killed the top Iranian general. What will Iran do? We can only wait and see.
The drums of war are beating. “War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.“ Says the song by Edwin Starr.
The drums of war are beating. What is war?
War is children searching through the rubble of blown up buildings in Syria for a bit of food. War is thousands upon thousands of refugees fleeing the bombs with only the clothes on their backs. War is thousands of young men and women with whole bodies, deployed to countries on the other side of the world, returning with PTSD and missing body parts. Or in caskets draped with American flags. War is the two tallest buildings in the world collapsing into dust after airplanes were flown into them. War is 58,000+ names on a wall in Washington, D.C. War is a madman aiming missiles on the 38th parallel at the DMZ. War is the USS Arizona’s gun turret visible in the clear blue water of Pearl Harbor. War is hundreds upon hundreds of rows of white crosses in a cemetery in France. War is evil.
The drums of war are beating. Our president has effectively declared war on Iran. When Iran strikes back, as she soon will, our president plans to destroy Iran’s cultural heritage, which belongs not to Iran but to the world.
The drums of war are beating. What comes to mind is the last scene of Planet of the Apes. Charleston Heston is riding down the beach on horseback. He comes upon the head of the Statue of Liberty in the sand. He dismounts, looks at Liberty’s head, blown from her body, and screams, “You maniacs. You blew it up. Damn you. Damn you all to hell“.
That’s how we would feel if our beloved Lady Liberty were to be blown up. That’s how the Iranians will feel if Trump’s threat would be carried out. That action would cause them to retaliate in kind, even though they would have to ask Russia to do it for them. Lady Liberty, the world wide symbol of the United States of America, would be Iran’s most obvious target. Our American primal scream would be heard around the world.
The drums of war are beating. That is what Trump is playing with. His actions so far have destroyed much of what is good in America. The sight of American flags being burned by Iranians is as jarring now as it was 40 years ago. How far will we let trump go? Until we see the head of our beloved Liberty in the sand?
The drums of war are beating. While we are still embroiled in Afghanistan and Iraq, our president has sent 3500 more troops to the Middle East, without the approval of Congress. These are our sons and daughters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. These people have spouses, children, parents, siblings, dogs and cats. They are people, just like the rest of us. They are our people. Why should they sacrifice, and be sacrificed, so that our president can be re-elected?
The drums of war are beating. Call your representatives and Senators. Tell them NO to war with Iran. Tell them we have had enough. Tell them the American people whom they represent say NO! Call 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your representative or Senator.
Blessings,
Anne
Note: As of the time of publication of this blog, news has just come that Iran has fired missiles at 2 American bases near Baghdad. No word yet of casualties. The drums of war are beating.
